Truthfully, a career in advertising was not where I saw myself when I was in college and trying to figure out life. You see, I wanted to earn a living as a musician. Touring the country, playing shows to sold out crowds, the whole deal. To this end, if you want to be successful band you have to come across that way. That means posters, promo photos, press kits, music videos, websites, flyers, etc. And all that costs money. Money we didn’t have when you’re not playing to sold out shows yet and the fifty bucks you made at the door goes to the bar tab.
Without funds to pay someone, we had to teach ourselves. And teach ourselves we did. Eventually, we had the coolest website, the most badass posters and the slickest press kits. Couple that experience with a degree in mass communications and I was hooked.
At first, I wanted to make the best looking stuff. But now, I want to make the smartest looking stuff. I want to make advertising that doesn’t always look like advertising. I want to tell stories. I want to be emotional and I want to be funny. I want to be inspired by others work and in turn hopefully inspire others. I may be an art director, but I’m not afraid to write a headline or a TV spot. I’m also not too proud to take art direction from a copywriter. I want to push clients to take the brave road, the bold road, the one that may make them nervous but also the one that will be the most successful for them. For me. For us.
